The beauty of public art is that it can send a powerful message to so many people, regardless of language, age, ability, class, race or gender. I have a passion for public art such as this and firmly believe that access to art should be for everyone.
The Upperthorpe to Walkley arts trail was funded by Sheffield City Council Economic Recovery Fund and inspired by the artwork of children from St Mary’s, Netherthorpe and Walkley schools. The trail consists of wonderful art, from local artists, hidden away on 25 telecoms boxes, 9 shop shutters and 2 wall murals.
My box is called ‘Love and Equality’ and is inspired by the words of a local child when Zest asked what Sheffield means to them, as their home. The words carry so much weight coming from a child, reminding us of the simple aims we should be striving for and the importance of love and equality in creating a friendly city. I hope this design will serve as a cheerful reminder for people who pass it, and put a smile on their face at the same time.
I’m really proud to have played a small part in this amazing project. Thank you, Zest!
This year, I was selected to be part of Puffins Galore! A public art trail across East Yorkshire for Summer 2022. Artists from Yorkshire and beyond have esigns to reflect either a local theme or message such as coastal and wildlife conservation, climate change or green energy.
A trail of 40 1.5m tall painted puffin sculptures are currently located in key points from Flamborough down to Spurn Point. The project aims to increase cultural tourism to the East Coast, encouraging visitors to explore the whole trail of sculptures.
Did you know Bridlington is the largest lobster port in the UK and Europe? My puffin celebrates Bridlington’s past, present and future in the shellfish industry. She has a great spot overlooking the harbour and the South Beach. It was especially lovely to watch people having their photo taken and ticking her off on their trail map, as well as watching children climb up and give her a hug, or count the number of lobsters on her back.

This year a competition was announced by Artworks to celebrate the UEFA Women's EUROS 2022. The winning artworks, including my design, were installed in the city centre throughout the tournament.
Through collaboration with Sheffield F.C. and Football Unites, Racism Divides, ArtWorks produced a short documentary of stories collected from female football players through a series of interviews. The competition invited artists to create work in response to the video.
My submission is inspired by a quote from the video that really stuck with me. One of the footballers talked about how she grew up playing football but at the time people didn't think that girls "should or could" play football. The design plays on this and blocks out the negative words to make a statement that girls CAN and SHOULD play football. It aims to attract people's attention and be inspiring to women and girls.
I was so delighted to hear that the Women's Euros would be held in our city this summer! As was mentioned in the video, I think it's so vital that women support women in order to elevate the women's game and to change the societal attitudes towards women and girls playing football.
And the Lionesses’ victory was the cherry on top!
